Sander van Bellegem“AKÆRI”

Sander van Bellegem (AKÆRI) is a Belgian new-media artist, 3D creator and immersive designer working at the intersection of sculpture, 3D, real-time audiovisual systems and participatory interaction. He builds installations that allow visitors to influence sound, light and image through presence and action,turning intangible processes into physical, sensorial encounters. Across his work, Sander explores symbiosis between humans, nature and technology, grounded in a protopian mindset: not predicting the future, but actively prototyping it.


Sander studied Digital Design at LUCA School of Arts (Ghent) and has since developed a hybrid practice spanning exhibitions, talks and research. His recent work has been presented at Us By Night and Tresor Dortmund (IDEAL), Hyperlab/Het Entrepot (Auralis), and Meralda/Broei (Impostor Nature). He has participated in development programs such as European Creators Lab (Lyon) and a Google Labs / Flow residency culminating in a screening in New York.


Alongside his artistic practice, Sander teaches 3D and 360° visuals at Howest Brugge (Mixed Experience Design and Graphic Design) and is researcher on how AI can support and reshape creative workflows in art and design education. Based in Ghent, he also contributes to the local scene through XRT—an initiative for immersive and interactive art community events.

MELONGRAY“ Experimental Short Film”
2025


MELONGRAY is an experimental short film that explores our shifting relationship with reality, time, nature and technology.


Through a series of atmospheric and symbolic scenes, the film reflects on a sense of acceleration and disorientation within contemporary society. Rather than telling a linear story, MELONGRAY unfolds through visual metaphors that blur the boundaries between organic environments and artificial systems, questioning how perception and meaning evolve in a technologically mediated world.


The film was developed as part of Google’s Flow Sessions, a creative program in which a small cohort of artists was invited to experiment with Google’s emerging generative video tools. Working within this experimental framework allowed for an intuitive and exploratory approach to filmmaking, where generative technologies were used not to automate creation, but to extend imagination and expand the possibilities of cinematic expression.


MELONGRAY represents an investigation into how new tools can be integrated into an artistic process while maintaining a strong authorial voice and conceptual direction.

SENMON CHARACTER“A Mascotte for Coffee Brand Senmon Roasters”
2025


For Senmon Roasters, the coffee brand served at Klik Kofiebar in Dendermonde, I created a custom 3D mascot character in collaboration with designer Lauren Bouden. The character was developed as a friendly brand anchor: a recognizable figure that can live across communication, packaging, and digital touchpoints. With a clean silhouette and playful expression, it translates Senmon’s tone into something immediate and memorable, a small presence with strong identity.

ICRESC V2“


Regenerative Stick ”
2025


ICRESC V2 is a speculative walking stick designed to disperse seeds as its user moves through the landscape. The project explores how everyday objects might actively contribute to ecological regeneration rather than simply support human activity.


Inspired by ideas of symbiosis and the need to rethink our relationship with nature, the walking stick transforms the simple gesture of walking into a quiet act of restoration. With each step, seeds are gradually released from a growth-shaped container attached to the stick, leaving traces that may eventually take root.


The object is digitally fabricated using bio-based PLA and finished with shellac. Its organic form resembles a benign growth or mutation, suggesting that not all proliferations are harmful; some may enable regeneration, entanglement, and care between species.


Rather than proposing a literal solution, ICRESC V2 functions as a speculative prototype, a tool that invites reflection on how technology could help humans become participants in ecological cycles rather than external observers.


The project was presented at Dutch Design Week (2025) as part of The Symbiocene Forest – Roots at BioArt Laboratories in Eindhoven.


The accompanying film, demonstrating the use of the walking stick in a forest environment,

IDEAL“ Interactive Installation ”

IDEAL is an interactive installation by Sarah Mayer (SA.M.CO) and Sander van Bellegem (AKÆRI) that reflects on digital identity and the unrealistic beauty standards reinforced through online platforms. The work translates the logic of the screen into a physical sculpture: an alluring object that reveals how digital platforms operate as feedback loops of idealization, projection, and self-distortion.

The installation was first presented at Tresor.West in Dortmund as part of the arc gallery exhibition There is no them in here – just an awful lot of us, with a soft opening on 22 August 2025, an official opening on 23 August 2025, and the exhibition running until 6 September 2025. It was later shown at Us By Night in Antwerp from 25 to 27 September 2025.

Through a simple hand swipe, visitors can scroll through a series of faces: digital IDEALs based on reference images drawn from a public beauty vote across more than 120 countries. Even without detailed visual instructions, the generated results repeatedly converge toward the same type of face: smooth, youthful, slim, and hyper-stylized. When no one is present, the faces remain blurred in the background; only when a visitor steps in front of the work do they come into focus. No scans are made and no visitor data is stored, only a confrontation with the virtual ideals that increasingly shape how we see ourselves.

AURALIS“


Interactive Audiovisual Installation”
2025


Auralis is an interactive installation exploring the relationship between light, nature and technology. The project originates from an homage to photosynthesis: the process through which light is transformed into energy and life, translated into an audiovisual sculptural environment.


The installation consists of three abstract forms representing the elements light, air and water. Together they create a dynamic system where projection, sound and human interaction influence one another. Through a set of instruments, visitors can actively engage with the work, triggering a live audiovisual composition that evolves through collective interaction.


In this way, Auralis functions as a contemporary campfire: a place where people gather, experiment and enter into dialogue with a work that only fully exists through participation.


The project was first presented as a prototype during Hyperlab at Het Entrepot (Bruges) — March 28, 2025, and later exhibited at Wonder Festival (Kortrijk, Belgium) — 2025.


Auralis was created by AKÆRI (Sander van Bellegem) in collaboration with Victor Vanderbeck, with Wouter Duprez responsible for the audio development.

IMPOSTER NATURE“ Research Artwork about AI”

Impostor Nature is a work that questions whether a sense of “deep” nature can be evoked through artificial processes. Created with the support of AI tools, the project takes the form of two video compilations and serves as both an artwork and a conversation starter.


Rather than presenting AI as a neutral tool, the work openly reflects on the tension between authorship, authenticity, emotion, and value in art. During the making process, the project raised a series of urgent questions: Can AI-generated art be considered a legitimate form of art? Does the artist lose integrity when designing with AI? Is the outcome still authentic, or merely a simulation of human creativity? And how do we judge the cultural, emotional, or financial value of art made through artificial systems?&#38;nbsp; 


For me, the project also emerged from a personal discomfort. While I contributed to the final result, the generated imagery felt less personal and at times produced a sense of impostor syndrome. The satisfaction that usually comes with making was partly absent. At the same time, the process remained fascinating, inspiring, and filled with possibility. That tension lies at the core of the work.


Presented at Meralda Expo at BROEI in Ghent in September 2024, Impostor Nature invited viewers not only to look, but to reflect. The installation was accompanied by questions addressed to the audience, encouraging an open dialogue on the meaning and future of creativity in the age of AI.
